A courteous letter regretting that because of his return to Corsica he could not see her in Paris and assuring her of his unchanging friendship, referring to other friends including the Countess of Albania and hoping, if his compatriots permit him, to visit Paris in 1792. The postscript, written on receiving his correspondent's letter from Venice, explains that the preoccupations of his position make him a slave to the pursuit of freedom for others and leave no time for diversions.

Written four months after Paoli returned from exile on being appointed governor of Corsica by the Directory. He was to hold the post only until 1793 when the Directory declared war on England.
