SCHOMBERG, Henri, Comte de, Marshal of France (1575-1632). Autograph letter signed ('Schonberg') to 'Monsieur le Cardinal' [Richelieu], camp at Castelnaudary, 2 September 1632, the date in another hand, 4½ pages, folio, integral address panel, docketed by recipient, remnant of seal (seal tear), gathered with red thread.
THE BATTLE OF CASTELNAUDARY. Schomberg hastens to write after the victory over the rebel army of Gaston, Duke of Orleans and Henri II de Montmorency, 'ce qui cest passé le jour dhier a la Gloire et avantage des Armes du Roy', asking where the wounded Montmorency is to be taken, and asking for a company of archers to guard him (noting 'Je le trete fort Civilement'), describing the size of his forces, and requesting a dispatch of funds.
Schomberg's army of 2000-2500 trained men defeated the ill-equipped force of 1200-1500 rebels in about half an hour. Montmorency was badly wounded, and was executed for treason in Toulouse on 30 October. Schomberg inherited the governorship of the Languedoc from Montmorency, but himself died on 17 November, his end hastened, it is said, by his chagrin at his opponent's execution.
