WALLENSTEIN, Albrecht von, Duke of Friedland & Mecklenburg (1583-1634). Autograph letter signed ('AHzF' i.e. Albrecht Herzog zu Friedland) to an unidentified commander, Brandeis, 7 January 1628, one page, folio, bifolium.

Wallenstein passes on what Count Schwarzenberg has written to him, confirming that the enemy is likely to find readier support in all the states than they are themselves, and therefore his recipient must take every opportunity to close with the enemy, ('alle gelegenheitt mitt dem feindt zu practiciren nehmen'), especially those around Rostock and Wismar, taking advantage of the enemy's weakness ('denn izt hatt der feindt wenig volk'), as once he is reinforced he will go on the offensive. In a postscript Wallenstein reminds the recipient to keep Schwarzenberg's letter secret, and to give him his opinion on Count Mansfeld, and also on the position of Sweden, since the Duchess of Brunswick tells him the Swedes mean to ally themselves with the enemy; he concludes with a reference to a report from the Duke of Weimar.

Wallenstein's suspicions as to Sweden's intentions were justified: his critical siege of Stralsund was to fail after the intervention of Swedish troops later in this same year.
