GUERICKE, Otto von (1602-1686, mentor of the air pump). Autograph letter signed ('Otto Gericke') to the Bürgermeister and Council of the city of Magdeburg, Leipzig, 22 February 1646, two words in code deciphered by recipient, 2/3 page, folio, integral address panel, fine impression of Guericke's armorial signet seal on red wax (slightly browned at margins, later small label to lower left margin).
Apparently relating to Guericke's role in negotiating the end of the Saxon occupation of his native city of Magdeburg: the reply to the recipients' question will be sent by the post [these two words in code], although he needs to reveal it to Hofmeister Einsidel or the chancellor in Halle first, so that the declaration can be communicated to the Prince. 'Die antworth uff sine schreiben wird E.E. Rath bey der Post empfangen. Ich habe ihn erst uff Halle an den hern hoffmeister Einsidel oder in dessen ab wesenheit den hern Kantzeler zu erbrächen, ab gefertigett, damit der Revers ihor fürtsl. Durchl. insinuïret werde'.
Guericke was rewarded for his successful role in the negotiations with the position of fourth Bürgermeister of his native Madgeburg. Guericke's invention of the air pump dates to 1650, and his famous experiment demonstrating that two copper hemispheres held together by a vacuum cannot be separated by a team of horses was first presented in 1657.
