Redi, physician and friend of Ferdinand II and Cosimo III, held the position of Superintendent of the Pharmacy at the Medici court. Also a leading literary figure (see lot 144), Redi was renowned for his scientific discoveries, in particular his experiment in 1668 with maggots, one of the first steps taken to refute 'spontaneous generation'.
