Lot Essay

Jan Baptist van der Meiren was a painter of landscapes and battle scenes, who became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1685 and may have travelled to Italy and Vienna. He was known for small-scale landscape scenes of Italian markets and ports and for painting the staffage figures in the landscapes of Adriaen Frans Boudewyns. His paintings are in the collections of the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp and the Musées des Beaux Arts, Brussels.
