Lot Essay

John Verelst was part of the Verelst family of painters who had originated in Holland, but established themselves in London. He was probably the grandson of the artist Harman Verelst (c.1643-1702), who in turn was the son of Pieter Verelst (1618-c.1678), for an example of whose work see lot 63.
