Lot Essay

Admiral Sir Edward Hughes entered the navy on 4 January 1735 and remained in active service for over fifty years. During this time he spent much of his time in the East Indies, trying to halt the French advancements into Asia. In recognition for his service, Sir Edward was promoted to Admiral of the Blue in February 1793, a year before his own death at the age of seventy-four.

After the full-length portrait by Reynolds in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
