Lot Essay

George Charles Pratt (1799-1866), was the son of John Jeffreys Pratt (1759-1840), 2nd Earl Camden, who was created 1st Marquess Camden and also Earl of Brecknock on 7 September 1812. As the title Earl Camden could not practically be used by both father and son, it is possible that the 1st Marquesss was granted a second Earldom so that George Charles could be known as Earl of Brecknock during his father's life. The present portrait shows him as the Earl of Brecknock, probably around the 1820s. On his father's death in 1840 he succeeded as 2nd Marquess Camden.
