The eared rectangular white marble top with pierced three-quarter gallery, above a roll-top revealing an interior with a gilt-tooled pale blue leather-lined writing-surface, two pigeon holes, three drawers and three simulated drawers, above three cut-corner panelled drawers, on fluted tapering legs terminating in toupie feet, stamped 'JME', and 'J. STOCKEL', the small drawers formerly with locks and with later panels

Lot Essay

Joseph Stöckel, maître in 1775.

This elegant bureau à cylindre, stamped by Joseph Stöckel, features 'scroll' terminals to the uprights which are characteristic for his work and can be found on other pieces by him, including a cylinder bureau, sold at Christie's, New York, 24 May 2000, lot 372. This bureau and various other pieces by Stöckel are closely related to the oeuvre of Jean-François Leleu (maître in 1764). A similar bureau by Leleu was sold from the Wildenstein collection, Christie's, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 370, and another, stamped by Leleu and Charles Antoine Stadler (maître in 1766), was sold at Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lot 223.
