This elegant bureau à cylindre, stamped by Joseph Stöckel, features 'scroll' terminals to the uprights which are characteristic for his work and can be found on other pieces by him, including a cylinder bureau, sold at Christie's, New York, 24 May 2000, lot 372. This bureau and various other pieces by Stöckel are closely related to the oeuvre of Jean-François Leleu (maître in 1764). A similar bureau by Leleu was sold from the Wildenstein collection, Christie's, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 370, and another, stamped by Leleu and Charles Antoine Stadler (maître in 1766), was sold at Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lot 223.
