Lot Essay

Joseph Stöckel, maître in 1775.

This elegant bureau à cylindre, stamped by Joseph Stöckel, features 'scroll' terminals to the uprights which are characteristic for his work and can be found on other pieces by him, including a cylinder bureau, sold at Christie's, New York, 24 May 2000, lot 372. This bureau and various other pieces by Stöckel are closely related to the oeuvre of Jean-François Leleu (maître in 1764).
