Lot Essay

Another version of this unusual, and rare, bronze exists as one of a pair in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (loc. cit.). In terms of style, finer details and casting, it relates very closely to the work of Nicolò Roccatagliata and although Penny (ibid.) proposes that the Ashmolean bronzes are poor casts by a later Venetian founder, the colour and method of casting of the present lot is consistent with the workshop of Roccatagliata himself.
