Lot Essay

The elegant proportions and, more specifically, the chandelle-filled flutes and pearl-decorated edges as well as the intricately-carved concave-fronted stretchers are typical for the oeuvre of Georges Jacob (1739-1814), perhaps the foremost maître menuisier of the 18th century. A slightly larger giltwood console table but with almost identical elaborately carved frieze, legs and stretchers and bearing Georges Jacob's stamp was sold from the collection of Anna Thomson Dodge, Christie's London, 24 June 1971, lot 78.
