Lot Essay

The present relief fits in neatly with a series of engraved female subjects executed in ivory by the Flemish sculptor François van Bossuit (see Tardy, Les Ivoires - Évolution décorative du Ier siècle a nos jours, Paris, 1972, pp. 111, 112 and 115). The engraved 'flecking' of the background is also characteristic of his work.
