François Gaspard Teuné, maître in 1766.

This superb meuble d'appui is stamped by François Gaspard Teuné, who trained in the workshop of his uncle Jean Popsel (maître in 1755) and himself became a master in 1766. Together with Popsel, Teuné undoubtedly collaborated on the manufacture of pieces for the marchand-ébéniste Pierre II Migeon (maître c.1725)
The present piece is embellished with a very elaborate parquetry design incorporating quatrefoil flowers in trelliswork and among lozenges. This pattern relates to the prototypes conceived by Jean-François Oeben circa 1760-63, such as the superb floral marquetry and cube parquetry commode from the Bensimon collection, illustrated in R. Stratmann-Döhler, Jean-François Oeben, Paris, 2002, p.53. A bold and undoubtedly the most costly feature of the present meuble d'appui are the impressive ormolu chutes to the angles. These superb mounts are enriched with overlapping piastres draped by laurel garlands and appear on the celebrated commode executed by Roger Vandercruse, dit Lacroix ('RVLC'), dated 1769, supplied to Louis XV's daughter, Madame Victoire, at the château de Compiègne, and now in the Frick Collection, New York (T. Dell, The Frick Collection, Princeton University Press, 1992, p.216).
A related cylinder bureau attributed to Teuné, decorated overall with lozenge parquetry and mounted with comparable drapery swags, was sold from the Di Portanova collection, Christie's, New York, 20 October 2000, lot 58, and a bureau plat stamped Teuné, was sold, Christie's, Paris, 26 November 2005, lot 233. A secrétaire also stamped Teuné, featuring a trellis marquetry similar to that of the present lot, was sold, Sotheby's, Paris, 18 October 2006, lot 67 (EUR156,000).
