Lot Essay

These splendid vases were probably executed at the Gardner factory of Moscow, which was established by Catherine the Great in the 1770s. A closely related pair of such vases with late 18th century bleu nouveau Sèvres porcelain flanked by the distinctive snake handles, and in addition mounted with lily spray candle branches, is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Objets montés du Moyen âge à nos jours, Paris, 2000, p. 168.
