This elegant commode's flower basket in marquetry of various woods is a recurrent feature in the oeuvre of Schmitz. It appears on various other examples by him, including a related commode sold, Christie's, New York, 19 May 2004, lot 264. Further related commodes by Schmitz are illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 836, fig.a, and in C. Packer, Paris Furniture, Newport, 1956, fig.92.
