Lot Essay

Jean Avisse (1723-c.1796), maître in 1745.

With their deeply moulded frames, sparse carved clasps and à chassis covers, these elegant and generous fauteuils are characteristic of Jean Avisse's work of circa 1755-1765. He employed various specialist carvers in his workshop, notably Jean-François Baillard, Claude Vinauche and Pierre Rousseau, which explains the richness and diversity of the carving of his chairs (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 33).
