With their deeply moulded frames, sparse carved clasps and à chassis covers, these elegant and generous fauteuils are characteristic of Jean Avisse's work of circa 1755-1765. He employed various specialist carvers in his workshop, notably Jean-François Baillard, Claude Vinauche and Pierre Rousseau, which explains the richness and diversity of the carving of his chairs (P.
