Lot Essay

We are grateful to Fred Meijer and Fabrice Faré who have both independently suggested the present attribution on the basis of photographs. This and the following picture, both remarkable for their jewel-like rendition of texture and detail, do not fit easily within Liegeois' oeuvre purely on account of their high quality. As Fred Meijer remarks 'they are more refined than the signed works we know by the artist and somewhat different (warmer and blonder) in colouring. They may represent a different phase in Liegeois' career, perhaps a later one'. It has been noted in the past that they are close to the hand of Willem van Aelst whose activity in Paris in the late 1640s was so influential on his French contemporaries.
