Lot Essay

The 1759 guide is the first to include the tennis courts in Paris on pp. 184-185. It also lists the maitres paumiers who ran the courts. The name of Masson appears four times - a common error made by tennis historians such as Fournier, Marshall and de Luze. The name Masson was not just one person, but was in fact four. The most famous, Antoine-Henry Masson, was the rue Mazarine maitres paumier.
