Lot Essay

Professor Werner Sumowski dates this portrait to the late 1650s by comparison with Ovens' signed Portrait of Johan Bernard Shaep in the Amsterdam Historisch Museum (see W. Sumowski, op. cit., III, p. 2234, no. 1538).
