Modelled by J.J. Kändler, wearing a turban, a long yellow-lined puce robe fastened with gilt buttons and tied with a white sash, a sword slung from a black belt, a dagger tucked into the sash, his moustachioed face turned to the right, his left arm raised and his right hand resting on a staff, standing before rocks on a circular rockwork base applied with a flower and foliage (broken through shins and restored, restored chip to left elbow, restoration to sword hilt and scabbard, left thumb and index finger, chipping to foliage)

Lot Essay

Kändler modelled a group of figures based on a series of engravings by Le Hay which were published in Paris in 1714 under the title Receuil des cents estampes représentant les différentes Nations du Levant. The series was ordered by Monsieur le Comte Charles de Ferriol, French Ambassador to 'The Sublime Porte'. Another example of this figure in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Cologne (Inv. Nr. E2852), is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Meissener Porzellan (Munich, 1966), pl. 228, no. 938, and another is illustrated by Len and Yvonne Adams, Meissen Portrait Figures (London, 1987), p. 168 along with the engraving by Le Hay on which the present figure was based.
