Sedbergh, in Yorkshire, is a town that has prospered on the sale and manufacture of wool and woollen goods from medieval times. It is possible that the goblet was commissioned for a member of the Foster family, well-known in Sedbergh; a 19th century account relates that one Robert Foster was a friend of Thomas Bewick, who was apprentice to, and then partner of, Ralph Beilby.
