Château Pétrus--Vintage 1945
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Slightly risen cork. Bin-soiled with one damaged corner of the label. Level top-shoulder
Tasting Note: This wine is hugely impressive, with a lively depth of colour; a bouquet that opens up gloriously. No question: sweet on the palate, full of fruit, flavour and, for a big wine, elegant. Almost too rich at a tasting in 1986, showing perfectly at Arthur Hallé's wonderful tasting in 1987 despite the sommelier opening and decanting the wines in the wrong order. In fact it worked out well. We were confounded, its bouquet perfection, evolving fabulously; mulberries, blackberries, deft touch of ginger, and powering out effortlessly. Two hours in the glass and only starting to fade. All the components in the mouth. 'Almost too nice' and 20 out of 20 awarded by me at one tasting Unquestionably impressive; for a big wine, elegant. Most recently, three magnums at a Grands Vins Fins dinner in Oslo: amazing colour, opaque, velvety, ruby rim; rich, spicy, fruit-packed; sweet, concentrated, very tannic.
