ROMANEE-SAINT-VIVANT OF THE SUPERB 1978 VINTAGE FROM THE DOMAINE
Lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD)
Offered duty-paid, but available in bond
Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru--Vintage 1978
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Bin-soiled and slightly stained labels, one torn. Levels: three 2cms, two 2.5cms, one 3cms and one 3.5cms below base of corks
Tasting Note: First noted at the Domaine in 1983: impressive colour, still youthfully purple at the rim; nose somewhat restrained, peppery, firm, unyielding at first though it opened up well, overall dry, crisp, with rich varietal aftertaste. Next, tasted at the St-Vivant vertical at the Domaine in 1995: distinctly deep, still ruby; very rich, singed, fragrant bouquet that opened up further in the glass until, for an hour, it was almost chocolatey sweet; the palate has sweetened up too though it had a dry, extended finish. Full of flavour. My second highest mark, after the '71, of the entire range (up to the '94). Most recently: bouquet fully evolved, surging out of the glass; sweet entry, dry finish, elegant. The essence of burgundy. Last tasted in the Hunter Valley, Sept 2000 ***** M.B.
