Lot Essay

Dendritic chalcedony of the type known as "moss agate" is characterized by a series of seaweed-like markings spread irregularly throughout the material. These markings are more commonly green, but as in the present example, may also be yellowish-gold, red or blue. Here they are so dense that the material verges on jasper.

The colorful, variegated markings provide a wealth of potential for the Chinese love of abstract markings capable of transformation through imagination into a myriad subjects. The spectacular coloring and markings make this one of the most exciting bottles of its type.
