Lot Essay

This bottle bears an abundance of auspicious symbols. The central lotus blossom signifies purity, as it rises unsullied out of muddied water, the peach represents immortality, and the bat symbolizes happiness or good fortune.

This is one of a series of masterful copies of Imperial ceramics produced during the late-Wing or Republican period for a foreign collectors' market. They were so well made that many were assumed genuine until quite recently, including this example.
