A FINE GERMAN (AUGSBURG) CLOSE HELMET FOR THE TILT
Circa 1580-90
Of characteristic tournament weight, with one-piece skull rising to a plain low comb, pierced at the rear with four pairs of lace-holes and with a larger pair of holes on both sides immediately above the neck (probably intended for brass eyelets), visor with centrally divided sight, pointed prow and retaining its original spring-mounted sliding lifting-peg and locking-stud, upper-bevor locked by an internal vertical spring with large moulded release catch, pierced with a series of slotted breaths on the right, chiefly arranged as two rows of opposing diagonals, lower-bevor with strongly pronounced chin and locked by a spring-mounted catch, the stud with additional hook-and-eye closure, two rear neck lames (associated, the frontal lames and lining rivets missing), and fitted with brass tubular plume-holder etched with strapwork on a tendril ground and with a pair of rosettes impaled by the retaining rivets.
