A FLEMISH CLOSE HELMET
Mid-16th Century, adapted for use in the 17th Century
With one-piece skull rising to a boldly roped comb, embossed with a single flute running parallel to the base of the comb, on both sides, pivoted visor cabled and embossed in continuation of the comb, formed with a centrally divided flanged sight, the outer edge cabled en suite with the comb, drawn out to a sharply pointed up-turned prow and fitted with lifting peg, upper-bevor pierced with circular arrangements of small circular breathes left and right, the upper edge turned and cabled, lower-bevor formed with a blunt chin and closed by a hook-and-eye, neck-guard of two lames front and rear, incised with single and double linear borders throughout, profusely studded with domed lining rivets, and retaining much of its early blue/black armoury finish between bands finished in the white.
