A COMPOSITE ITALIAN MIQUELET-LOCK SPORTING GUN, BRESCIAN AND NEAPOLITAN

With early 16th Century sighted barrel coarsely chiselled with a trellis of leafy branches in relief on an engraved scale-pattern ground over almost its entire length, the muzzle issuant from the flared mouth of a monster's head chiselled in high relief (the pan removed), large flat lock cut with a scrolling pattern of flowers and vine leaves on a stippled ground, the tail formed as a monster's profile head chiselled in high relief, the mainspring and the pan each with pierced bridle involving figural subjects, the neck of the cock formed as a seated male nude chiselled in the round, the back of the steel decorated with a large demon mask in high relief (a figural finial missing) and the steel spring cut in the form of a full-length female nude, carved earlier walnut full stock of Petronel type (rubbed, inlays removed), inset with pierced chiselled iron plaques involving scrolling flowers and grotesques, iron butt-plate and side-plate decorated en suite, later trigger-guard cast in high relief, and later ramrod.
