A NORTH GERMAN HORSEMAN'S HAMMER
Late 16th Century
With one-piece head formed with a conical hammer nose, tapering fluke of stiff-diamond section and the head retained by a transverse bolt (belt hook missing), slender iron haft formed in three stages, the central portion spirally fluted and the ends rectangular and cut with a stylised running leaf pattern, and fitted with wooden grip studded with domed brass nails (with traces of a fabric covering), a small disc fitted over either end, the forward disc drawn up to a projecting point at the front.
