A COMPOSITE ENGLISH CLOSE-HELMET
Mid-16th Century
Of russet steel and retaining traces of a painted finish, almost certainly from a funerary achievement, with one-piece skull rising to a cabled comb, swept to the rear and pierced for attaching a crest, visor formed with a single sight with flanged cabled lower edge and pointed prow fitting deep into the upper-bevor, the latter rising to a sharply pointed exaggerated prow and pierced with small breaths left and right, lower-bevor with blunt chin, neck-guard of two lames front and rear, and turned cabled edges throughout (the lower-bevor extensively cracked at the chin, the neck lames associated and extensively chipped on one side, lifting-peg and closure hook each replaced).
11.5in (29.3cm)
