A FINE FRENCH CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION RIFLED TARGET PISTOLS WITH INTERCHANGEABLE SMOOTH-BORE BARRELS FOR SHOT, SIGNED FNI PAR GASTINNE-RENETTE À PARIS
Nos. 008509/10, circa 1860-65
With signed blued octagonal sighted polygroove-rifled barrels numbered 1 & 2, engraved case-hardened breeches, engraved case-hardened breech tangs each with blued back-sight, detented mottled case-hardened locks engraved with spiralling patterns of fine scrollwork, figured walnut half-stocks stamped 1 & 2, chequered butts, engraved case hardened mounts including oval butt-caps and trigger-plates with leaf finial, blued spurred trigger-guards decorated en suite with the mounts and locks, and retaining very nearly all of their original finish throughout, St. Etienne proof: in original contour-fitted two-tier oak case, lined in green baize (very small patches of wear and staining), the lid signed 'Gastinne Renette Paris' in gilt-stamped letters, vacant escutcheon (carrying strap missing), with an interchangeable pair of 14 5/8in blued two-stage barrels signed and numbered 1 & 2, and retaining its full complement of accessories, almost all the original (nipple-wrench associated), including bullet mould engraved en suite with the pistols, six-cavity gang mould, green leather shot-flask, and a fine Hawksley copper powder-flask.
