This work was conceived by Auguste Rodin when he was working in the studio of Albert Carrier-Belleuse, a celebrated French sculptor with a studio in Brussels. The artists agreed that Carrier-Belleuse would sign most of Rodin's works while the latter was under his tutelage. Rodin would later reapply various elements of the Innocence in other works, such as the little putti in Toilette de Venus, or the resuscitation of the Innocence's face in numerous heads of Bacchantes such as the famous Suzon.
