Lot Essay

The motto Cavendish For Ever Huzza probably represents a rallying cheer for William Cavendish, the 4th Duke of Devonshire, Prime Minister from 1756-57, until the start of the Seven Year's War. The term 'Huzza' was used throughout the 17th and 18th Centuries as a version of 'Hurrah' or 'Hooray'.
