A GEORGE I SILVER SUGAR BOX AND COVER
MARK OF ANTHONY NELME, LONDON, DATE LETTER OVERSTRUCK, POSSIBLY 1717
Baluster oval and on spreading foot, the hinged cover with a baluster finial, engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked under foot and inside cover
5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) wide
18 oz. (562 gr.)
The arms are those of Coytmore impaling Bertie for Robert Coytmore or Coetmore (1691-1725) of Coytmore, co. Carnarvon and his wife Bridget (1696-1734), daughter of James Bertie who died in 1735. They had three children Robert, Mary and Bridget. Robert Coytmore matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford on 20 October 1708. While it is unclear the exact date of the marriage we do know that their middle daughter, Mary, was baptized in September of 1719 so it is possible that this sugar box was part of a service of plate made to celebrate the marriage.
