Lot Essay

According to Dr. Valerie Leeds, the present work appears to be from 1918, executed while Henri was visiting Monhegan Island, and depicts Cathedral Woods. It may be a portrait of Ruth Jacobi, a friend and former student of the artist who accompanied the Henri family to Monhegan Island.
