Lot Essay

After the original monuments on the Place Vendôme and Place de la Concorde, Paris.

The original obelisk is one of the pair of obelisks that were erected in front of the Luxor Temple in Egypt, 13th Century B.C.. The red granite monolith (23 meters high) is decorated with hieroglyphs exalting the reign of pharao Ramses II. The obelisk was presented as a gift to Charles X by the Egyptian viceroy Mohammed Ali (c.1769-1849) in 1829 and was installed under Louis Philippe, the procedure, including the mechanical devices that were used, are portrayed on the pedestal.
