The present lot is after a pastel on blue paper Study of the Head of a Fox by Oudry in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin, (see Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Gemälde Handzeichnungen, 1686-1755, Schwerin, 1986, p. 60, illustrated).
It has been suggested that the present painting could be the work of Johann Dietrich Findorff (Lauenburg 1722-1772 Ludwigslust). Findorff was court-painter to Duke Christian Ludwig II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. At the court, Findorff copied many works in the Duke's collection.
