Lot Essay

After a 'coup d'état' in 1764, Poniatowski was elected King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth supported by the Russian Czar, but he was forced to abdicate in 1795 and left for Saint Petersburg. He was important for Polish cultural life, founding among others the Polish National theater and remodeling the Royal Castle in Warsaw. He also created a picture gallery, print room and numismatic collection. Most of the paintings he had collected can now be seen in Dulwich Picture Gallery, London.
