Lot Essay

The 'bason stand' corresponds to a pattern in the 1760 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 111). A related wash-stand was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 November 1998, lot 18 (£12,650).
