Lot Essay

The cushioned leaf-wrapped frieze of this chimneypiece, adorned with a central tied ribbon, is similar to a chimneypiece design by Batty Langley, illustrated in his Treasury of Designs, 2nd ed, 1745, pl. LXL B (first published 1740). Another similar chimneypiece design by Abraham Swan (fl.1745-68) was illustrated in his The British Architect; or The Builder's Treasury of Staircases, London, 1745 (E. White, The Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Suffolk, 1990, p. 37).
