The rectangular base with turned spindle and slatted divisions with wreath-shaped ends and acorn finials at each corner, above a mahogany-lined drawer with original handle, on baluster legs with brass caps and castors

Lot Essay

This canterbury derives from a design by John C. Loudon published in 1833 in his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833. A canterbury of the same design was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 23 January 2002, lot 515 ($8,225).
