The present picture combines various motifs from works by Constable, such as Flatford Mill on the River Stour, and the figure on a white horse (see The White Horse, 1819, The Frick Collection, New York). It is painted in the '6-footer' format favoured by Constable from around 1819, when he began painting on a larger scale to exhibit at the Royal Academy.
