'Oscar', a rare Steiff PB28 rod bear
with blonde mohair, black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped muzzle with gutta-percha nose, horizontal seam from ear to ear, remains of stitched mouth, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads and five black stitched claws and hump, circa 1904 --16¼in. (41.5cm.) high (bald patch on front of left arm and chest, two small holes in the centre of these two areas, thinning to backs of legs, some general thinning to mohair, moth damage and discolouration to pads)

This is an example of the earliest Steiff jointed bear that apears on the collectors' market. The rod bear is the second stage in Steiff's development of the teddy bear, the first which had cord joints is yet to re-appear.
