FIRST EDITION. Men's sexual organs, associated with mystery cults, such as the cult of Priapus in the ancient world, first became the subject of scientific investigation in the Renaissance. Initially they were studied primarily for medico-legal reasons and for their function in procreation and sex. In this work Graaf provided what has been described as an exact and detailed account of the male reproductive system, particular the anatomy of the testicle. To this he added an account of the use of clysters (enemas) which were just coming into fashion, a discussion of experimental fistulae, and an improved syringe.
