FIRST EDITION. Cowper, an anatomist, surgeon, and artist published as his first book a systematic study of muscles of the human body with ten plates engraved after his own drawings. In 36 chapters it covers the muscles systematically from the muscles of the abdomen to the "muscles of the four lesser toes." An appendix discusses the penis and the physiology of its erection. Cowper died of congestive heart failure at the age of 42. He is remembered eponymically for the male urethral glands, called the "glands of Cowper."
