GAUTIER D'AGOTY, Jacques. "Hermaphrodite. Disserations au sujet de la fameuse Hermaphrodite..." Paris: Berryer, 9 December 1749.

Broadsheet (536 x 373 mm). One leaf of text. One color mezzotint, varnished (minor marginal spotting). 19th-century decorated paper boards (covers detached).

Beyond their emphasis of sexuality in the anatomical images, Gautier and the surgeon Mertrud seem to have been especially interested in hermaphrodites, as they also included images of them in the first volume of their periodical (1752). Perhaps they merely sensed a commercial opportunity in satisfying popular curiosity about these bizarre and unfortunate cases which so very few people ever see in life. EXTREMELY RARE. Choulant-Frank p. 273; Franklin, Early Colour Printing p. 49; Russell, British Anatomy 313 (describing and illustrating a unique copy of an English translation of the broadside, with a black and white image, published in 1750); Singer 135 (with date of 1754).
