JENTY, Charles Nicholas. Humanae structurae demonstrationes. [London: Printed for and sold by the author at his house in Fetter Lane, and all the eminent booksellers of Europe, 1756.]
Plate 3 only. Color mezzotint (965 x 643) after Joannes van Rymsdyk by Jacob Boulanger. (Some marginal soiling and repair, some color retouched.) Folded and bound in modern cloth-backed boards.
FIRST EDITION of one of four large folio plates originally issued with an accompanying text entitled An Essay on the Demonstration of the Human Structure, Half as Large as Nature, in Four Tables, from the Pictures Painted after Dissections, for that Purpose (London: Printed for, and Sold by, The Author, at his House in Fetter-Lane, and all the Eminent Booksellers in Europe, 1756) The plate was drawn by Jan van Rymsdyk and reproduced by mezzotint through the process exploited in France by the Gautier d'Agoty family, using four plates (black and the three primary colors). The plate is signed, Jacob Boulanger--an identified engraver. Russell, British Anatomy 478 states that Jenty's text says that he had the plates reproduced through mezzotint, printed in black and white, and then hand-colored. However, Rodar, Anatomie de la couleur. L'invention de l'estampe en couleurs (1996) which describes and illustrates this particular example as item 122, states that the plate is color printed.
Concerning Jenty's life nothing is known except what is stated in his publications. He was born in Paris and trained in surgery there. By around 1756 he was living in London and lecturing on anatomy, and perhaps practicing surgery from his home. ALL OF HIS PUBLICATIONS ARE EXTREMELY RARE. Anatomie de la couleur 122; Roberts & Tomlinson p. 456.
