2o (511 x 343 mm). 38 engraved plates (19 printed in 2 colors and 3 printed in 3 colors) (some dampstaining to upper right corners). (Some dampstaining, title-page with loss at lower right corner not affecting text.) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards (front joint starting, some wear to edges). Provenance: Haskell F. Norman (bookplate; his sale part II, Christie's New York, 15 June 1998, lot 665).

FIRST EDITION. The unusual feature of this anatomy for painters and sculptors is that the printing of some copies, including this one, was done in three colors--outlines of the bones in black, muscles, arteries and internal organs in sanguine, and veins in blue. In other copies the printing was all done in black, and the color was applied by hand. Choulant-Frank p. 331; Duval & Cuyer, Histoire de l'Anatomie Plastique (1898) pp 358-63 (showing a relationship between Medico's engravings and unpublished drawings by Géricault); Garrison-Morton 406; Heirs of Hippocrates 1166; Norman 1484.
