Paul Beck Goddard was a professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsyvlania and a pioneer in photography who accelerated the process of making daguerreotypes by applying vapor of bromide to the silvered plate. Henry Hollingsworth Smith was Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, Smith was made Surgeon-General of Pennsylvania (1861-1862), responsible for organizing the state's military hospitals. He established new practices for removing the wounded from the battlefield and introduced the practice of embalming the dead on the battlefield. (3)
